The Poker Game
A lot of factors can determine how a night at the tables will go. Poker differs from other gambling ventures in that you are playing against free thinking opponents. In poker the best player will often win more than the best hand at the table, but the cards can turn everything as well.
One fun thing about poker is that people of all different skills can all end up at the same table competing with each other and the game can still be competitive. Skill does make a huge difference, but luck is also a great equalizer. Just because the expert at the table makes the right play given the odds, favorable odds don't always pay off. Sometimes the wrong play with all things considered, turns out to be the winner.
The size of a game can affect how it's played. If there are more callers in a particular hand, the odds can be more difficult to determine. When more players call in to see a flop, there are a lot more possibilities and combinations of cards that could prove winners. If you have a good starting hand and don't hit on the flop versus several callers, chances are your hand quickly went from the best to one of the worst.
For this reason the timing and size of your bets need to be made strategically to manipulate the play of the rest of the table. If you have a strong starting hand, you want the lesser hands to fold. To accomplish this you must bet a relatively high amount that weaker hands wouldn't call. This way when the flop comes, you'll have a better idea of what the remaining players will have. Their hands would more than likely hold higher cards or pocket pairs that would prompt the high call amount before the flop.
There are often players at tables that will call along with almost any hand in almost any situation. A good player can take advantage of these types of players by trapping them with the perfect hand to make a lot of money.
Other tables might have bullies. These players will bet large sums in nearly every hand trying to control the action and buy the blinds. They know that the other players at the table would need a very good hand to keep up with the pace being set. They also know that if the flop isn't strong, that player's hand that was good enough to call the large bet initially will now be weakened. It often doesn't even matter what hand the bully is playing with as the other players are being put at risk. It can be a smart way to play at certain tables, but it's always good to check the chemistry of any give table as they all tend to have a life of their own.
